Ministry of Environment: Petroleum Sector Plays a Key Role in Achieving Carbon Neutrality in Cambodia

Phnom Penh – The Ministry of Environment has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a clean, pollution-free Cambodia as a core aspect of protecting the well-being of citizens and the environment. In line with this mission, the petroleum sector is dedicated to contributing to the reduction of air pollutant emissions, striving towards the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

This initiative was highlighted during a meeting on the implementation of the Euro V fuel standard held on December 20, 2024, at the Ministry of Environment. Dr. Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, commended oil companies for their active role in enhancing air quality and reducing pollution in Cambodia.

Minister Eang emphasized the critical importance of health, stating, "Health is a very important factor for the lives of all citizens. Without health, there is no life, and without life, there is no environment." He outlined the Royal Government of Cambodia's five strategic goals aimed at advancing socio-economic development while prioritizing environmental sustainability:

Ensure economic growth at an average annual rate of around 7%, with resilience to crises. Create more quality jobs for the Cambodian population, particularly for the youth. Achieve a poverty reduction target of less than 10% and strive to minimize the poverty rate further. Strengthen governance capacity and improve the quality of institutions at both national and sub-national levels to enhance public service effectiveness, while promoting a conducive environment for business, investment, and trade. Ensure the sustainability of socio-economic development and build resilience against climate change.

The Ministry of Environment’s ongoing collaboration with the petroleum sector is seen as a pivotal component in Cambodia’s efforts to combat climate change and promote a healthier environment for its citizens.
